How the three years are structured
Phase 1 — Foundation
Launch the consortium, align institutional roles, and complete the first international Training of Trainers and cascading programme.
Phase 2 — Build
Co-create competency-based curricula, run the blended faculty-development pathway, and establish a curriculum quality-assurance framework.
Phase 3 — Embed

Study visit to Maastricht and Karolinska
SNU, East Africa University and the Federal Ministry of Health Somalia joined an applied learning visit covering curriculum design, faculty development, assessment and quality assurance. Read the report →
Training of Trainers completed
Somali academic staff completed the international Training of Trainers programme delivered by Maastricht University and Karolinska Institutet, preparing them to cascade the learning at home.
Cascading training for 15 staff, Mogadishu
A two-day training at SNU transferred the Training of Trainers knowledge to a wider group of educators — competency-based curriculum design, student-centred teaching and Problem-Based Learning. Read the report →
Three-month blended learning programme
Participants from the cascading training continue their professional development through a structured blended learning programme.

Applying constructive alignment to selected curricula and modules, and establishing a curriculum quality-assurance framework across SNU and East Africa University.

Managing hybrid participation requires strong coordination
Running the launch simultaneously in person and online demanded careful coordination between the Mogadishu venue and remote participants. Future events will allocate dedicated coordination capacity for the hybrid element from the outset.
Technical contingencies need planning up front
Minor technical difficulties affected the virtual sessions. Testing procedures and contingency arrangements are being strengthened for subsequent hybrid activities.
Protect time for discussion
The programme would benefit from tighter scheduling, particularly to protect the discussion sessions participants valued most. This is informing the design of future project events.
Adapt international practice to Somali realities
The European study visit made clear that student-centred learning, constructive alignment and blended delivery all work — but only when designed around realistic connectivity, staff capacity and learner access in Somalia.
